Enamelling

Enamelling is the art of using powder or paste and applying to jewellery, which is then fired in a kiln to produce a smooth coloured coating. An ancient technique, enamelling is also favoured with art nouveau jewellers. Colour in enamel is obtained by the addition of various minerals, often metal oxides. Delicateshades ranging from pure violet to wine-red can be achieved. Enamel can be either transparent, opaque or opalescent (translucent), which is a variety that gains a milky opacity the longer it is fired.

Skills Gained:

This 3 day course will introduce you to the tools and techniques of enamelling onto metal to create contemporary jewellery.

You will learn a variety of techniques as well as Counter enameling, not strictly a technique, but a necessary step in many techniques, is to apply enamel to the back of a piece as well - sandwiching the metal - to create less tension on the glass so it does not crack. You will leave with your very own piece of enamelled jewellery.
