Profile of industry

Overview of industry

In the modern world of convenience, jewellery remains one of the few items valued for its beauty. Britain is at the heart of traditional, and increasingly modern, design and creation.

Making jewellery is one of Britain’s oldest crafts.  If you choose your career in this trade, you will be using your hands in an industry proud of its skills, and eager to apply new technology.

London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh are the main centres for the manufacture of jewellery. Whether it is an individual designer’s diamond ring or a one-off bespoke necklace, you will most likely find it being produced in these areas.

Careers
Types of jobs vary enormously. Some employment is semi-skilled and there are careers for those willing to go on learning a craft all their lives. Many jobs in the trade today make use of new technology, such as Computer Aided Design. In contrast, there are handcrafts rooted in traditional skills that no machine can replace. Mounter, setter, polisher, caster, enameller, silversmith, engraver, designer, retailer…. the career options are extremely varied. The common denominator is the skills that reinforce all of these disciplines. Skills the Academy can offer.

For those making jewellery, whether with traditional skills, new technology or a blend of both, there is a real feeling of pride in producing items that will be chosen for their beauty and be treasured for hundreds of years.
