Enamelling is the art of using powder or paste and applying to jewellery, which is then fired in a kiln to produce a smooth coloured coating. An ancient technique, enamelling is also favoured with art nouveau jewellers. Colour in enamel is obtained by the addition of various minerals, often metal oxides. Delicateshades ranging from pure violet to wine-red can be achieved.
